This month, it is the turn of Wigan artist, Jane Fairhurst to install artwork in the Great Northern Warehouse Watch this Space Window at 285 Deansgate.
From Thursday 11th February – 5th March, Jane will be exhibiting her powerful symbols of protection; sculptures and paintings inspired by the art of spinning thread and the production of decorated cloth. In ancient times, women produced these artifacts including clothing, hats, bags and bedding as protective devices and were often associated with the magic of childbirth.
Jane employs the traditional craft skills handed down to her through generations of women on the distaff side, or female line, in her family. Her textiles and paintings have been made in response to unsettling global politics and increasing climate change and are the result of her in-depth research into ancient devices, amulets, talismans and fetish objects.
Jane Fairhurst is a professional artist with over three decades making art, exhibiting and curating exhibitions. She attended Liverpool School of Art at 18 and has been studio-based for over 20 years. She gained a Master’s degree with distinction from Liverpool John Moores University in 2010. Jane works across a range of media including textile sculptures, painting, drawing, mixed media and installation from her studio at Cross Street Arts in Greater Manchester.
