More than 500 members of Girlguiding Manchester are set to ‘swarm’ the city centre on Sunday 19th August to visit their Bee in the City, Agnes Bee-den Powell, number 49 at the Great Northern.
Girlguiding members from all sections, Rainbows (girls aged 5-7) through to Rangers (young women aged 14-18) and their leaders, will gather together in uniform for a giant group photo at 11am before setting off on the Bee in the City art trail, picnicking at Great Northern Warehouse and competing in a sandcastle building competition as well as other fun activities such as giant garden games, bee bracelet making, bee designing, face paints and bee tattoos.
Wild in Art and Manchester City Council are bringing all of Manchester’s communities together for Bee in the City, one of the most spectacular public art events the city has ever seen. Over 100 Bees are waiting to be discovered on this free, family-fun trail, taking in the city’s landmarks and undiscovered gems.
Agnes Bee-den Powell is currently taking hive at the Great Northern, a retail, entertainment and business destination in the heart of Manchester. Located on Deansgate, the Grade 2 listed building has 35 brands stretching from diverse food outlets and fun leisure activities including axe-throwing and virtual reality gaming, to top interior designers.
Girlguiding Manchester’s Bee was designed by Jodie Silverman, inspired by drawings from their members, and shows the amazing opportunities that Girlguiding offers every girl. Helen Salvini, County Commissioner for Girlguiding Manchester said “we wanted to be involved because Girlguiding is such an integral part of communities across the UK. The competition to design our bee enabled members to express through art what they value most about Girlguiding and the opportunities it offers. We have been overwhelmed by the response to our bee and are so proud to be part of this project”

Girlguiding has recently undergone the biggest overhaul in the charity’s history, revamping its iconic badges and activities to create a programme for every girl.
