New Great Northern Bar Celebrates The Impossible Made Possible in Manchester
Drinks inspired by the amazing feats achieved in Manchester alongside impossibly difficult signature dishes kangaroo tacos, salt and pepper crickets and 63 Impossible gins from around the world – welcome to ‘Impossible Manchester’
The new venue on Peter Street is part of the Great Northern, and form 5pm on Thursday 22nd June featuring a bar and eatery which will be known as ‘Impossible Manchester’ along with a separate gin nest named ‘Ginpossible’.
The key inspiration behind the unique venue created by Manchester based Aaron Mellor, MD of Tokyo Industries, the UKs largest privately owned nightclub operator, with 36 of the UKs coolest bars, clubs and music festivals. ‘Impossible’ is not the typical music or art influences but purely the huge wealth of talent that has driven the creation and discovery of moderns feats from the first computer to the first ice cream cone; the first passenger railway to splitting the atom.
Following a £3m renovation of the three floor site on the edge of the Great Northern Square, the ground floor will feature a 280 cover bar / restaurant serving a duplex menu. A full kitchen menu operates noon until 9pm with a separate ‘Impossible Taco’ popup serving guests through to the early hours. The decor is scattered with nods to the brilliant achievements of Mancunians and the Impossible spirit of Manchester, the greatest city on the planet.
Whilst the second floor mezzanine area has been transformed into a gin palace like no other. A log fired hideaway with secret booths, and a molecular cocktail laboratory serving an array of specialty cocktails from the possible to the improbable and maybe even the impossible. An alcoholic mist condenser and an ‘Impossibubble’ lickable champagne bubble generator.
The damn near impossible drinks are created with the wonder of discovery in mind. They challenge perception and surprise with flavours and states that shouldn’t be possible but are. Stories of the more fantastical feats of Manchester’s history – some true, some impossible – bring the drinks list alive.
Characters include:
– The Dark Duke of Deansgate with his large handlebar moustache was a purveyor of gins from the darkest distilleries of old England driving queues round the block to drink at the bar that never ran dry.
– The Lady Rhoden of Rhoden Cattery always succumbed to gentlemen’s flattery until she discovered the more she did drink that all men’s charm would utterly stink!
– Plus Tony “chopper” Arkwright who was Manchester’s 1st Olympic surfer often seen carving up puddles in Castlefield or catching a ripple from a speeding canal barge.
A cryogenic freezer, one of three in the World, will be used to freeze any alcohol at minus 74 Degrees so that guests can ‘eat’ a selection of impossibly good cocktails. From Lady Rhoden’s Fella Repella with a 4 or 8 gin flight of specially selected gin and tonics served frozen to Impossicones which will combine strawberry shortcake and mint chocolate in an ice cream cone – the drinks will certainly offer a unique take on the ever popular mother’s ruin!

Following the launch of the bar will see ‘Theatre du Impossible’ open in the basement later this summer. It will bring Aaron’s extensive experience in Ibiza, London and LA to a new type of immersive live night out for Manchester’s party people.
