This month, 285 Deansgate hosts a brand new exhibition featuring two renowned artists, whose work explores size and scale and what it means for both creator and viewer, in collaboration with Mura Ma.
Titled Playgrounds & Palaces, the free-to-visit installation showcases work by contemporary painter Alison Edmonds, whose small and large-scale demonstrate how size can influence the viewing experience, alongside Vic Wright’s mesmerising cast sculptures which draw the visitor into an intimate encounter.
Edmmonds has been developing her own visual language or mythology using recurring images and ideas, which progress and develop organically and then spatially positioned or ‘found’ within space.
Colourful trails guide the viewer around her paintings to compositionally connect and direct, offering a playful narrative on each viewing.
Vic Wright is a sculptor based in Stockport and has an explorative approach to her work, seeking to capture the differences between contrasting elements to create a visual language between materials. Her work evokes the natural world, distorted and moulded to give new context. Vic is influenced in how nature displays beauty in difference. Her interest in using industrial materials create spellbinding tactile results.
In this exhibition, Vic Wright is showing some of her cast editions, collections of small sculptures that are available as collections of interacting shapes that connect with each other to create an adaptable arrangement. All the pieces in the whole series can be displayed and stacked in a variety of different ways.
