At the Great Northern it’s important to us that the Great Northern Square contributes to the life of the city. This summer we installed a giant, free sandpit and it’s been brilliant! We had to slide 50 tonnes of sand into the amphitheatre to build it – but it was worth it. Kids, families and grownups have loved the sandpit and we will be bringing it back next year for even longer. But now we want to do something groovy over the winter, so we need to move the sand out. That’s 50 tonnes of sand to be moved – bucket by bucket!
The sand is going to a good cause. We are donating it to the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) to create two natural play areas for kids. But first we need to get the sand out. Can you help?
We are taking the sand out on Sunday 14th, Monday 15th, Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th of October.
We reckon it will take 3142 bucket loads to get it all out – that’s 523 people working for one hour! So, this is how you can join in:
- Turn up any time on these four days and fill a bucket! All help is welcome! Your time and energy will help the RSPB and get kids playing creatively. Monday – Wednesday you can work anytime from 8am – 7pm. Sunday it will be 11 – 5pm.
- If you want sand for your garden or allotment, bring a car and take some away – we’ll provide the bags.
- If your team at work would like to lend a hand, we are offering four ‘Sweat the Sand’ team days! In exchange for your team working for 3 hours, we can offer a complimentary lunch or dinner at Home Sweet Home. There needs to be at least 6 people in a team and we can fund £10 a head for food.
Let us know if you’d like to help!
