The Manchester Jazz Festival Piano Trail returns for 2026!

Posted: 19th March 2026

Manchester Jazz Festival and Forsyth Music Shop are back with the return of the much-loved piano trail, bringing music to the streets once again as 18 freely accessible pianos are placed across Greater Manchester this spring.

Launching on International Piano Day 29th March and running until 31st May, the mjf piano trail will see pianos dotted across the city region, including one at Great Northern, inviting passers-by of all ages and abilities to sit down and play.

As the UK’s largest piano trail, the mission is simple: to encourage everyone to come together and share in the joy of music-making. Whether you’re a seasoned pianist or just fancy having a go, everyone is welcome to take part.

In collaboration with Forsyth Music Shop and Yamaha, the 2026 trail also marks the return of the competition to discover Manchester’s hidden musical talent, with a range of prizes set to be announced soon.

There are no rules when it comes to what you play; from original compositions to timeless favourites, jazz or otherwise, it’s all about getting creative, having fun and making music in and for the city.

Launch Event
Join the team for the official launch at Trafford Palazzo on Sunday 29th March, 2PM-3PM, featuring performances from last year’s piano trail winner and students from Trafford Youth Music Services. This is a free, drop-in event.

Play It Forward: Street Piano Fund
This year also introduces the Play It Forward: Street Piano Fund campaign, launched in partnership with Forsyth Music Shop. The initiative aims to grow the piano trail across Greater Manchester, bringing more instruments to more communities year-round and ensuring even more people can experience the joy of playing.

Piano Walking Tours Return
Back by popular demand, the piano walking tours return on Sunday 17th and Sunday 24th May in collaboration with Free Manchester Walking Tours. Led by Josh, the tours explore the trail across the city centre, taking in theatres, galleries and hidden gems, alongside pop-up performances from genre-blending collective Sherpa K.
